UFRA 2013 Charity Concert

On Sunday UFRA (Urayasu Foreign Residents Association) put on a concert to raise money to help restore school libraries in Tohoku which were badly damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011.

As time has passed the disaster has drifted away from the front pages of newspapers and from the front of people's minds, however support is still needed to help restore the area which was completely devastated by the earthquake, resulting tsunami, and aftershocks. Continued charity events such as these are still necessary. I have a number of friends who travel up north with teams of volunteers to help with building work and whatever needs doing and I hope I'll be able to join them at some point and do my part to help.

In the meantime, I was able to help a little with this event. Meikai University were kind enough to donate the use of the space to stage the show and a number of students came along to help set up and take down the show as well.

There were musical performances by Nii Tete, a percussionist from Ghana, Sam Bennet of the USA playing some kind of cigar box guitar (among other weird and wonderful instruments), and Habu Hiroshi from Japan, another percussionist playing a hand-made drum. We were also joined by Chiba street dance crew White Hat, who were really impressive (so much so that I didn't take any photos because I was too busy watching!).
